Woven Narratives Saltaire Show

After my return from iamda mobile art 2010 conference I kept up with some of the new friendships that had started. One of those new friends was fabric Lenny. Before we even knew each other we had the pleasure of both being featured in the July edition of mac forum, after the conference I was emailing him an image he created on my iPad when his battery had died, and he quipped that when he opened the file he was disappointed to find his own work and not an invitation to colloborate, so how could I refuse?

The next thing I did was send him some drawings I had begun. We set down the ground rules and the mesh up began…

A year later the collaborative project ‘Woven Narratives’ bares its fruits to the public for the first time! Tonight marked the opening of an exciting new show at The Butterfly Rooms’ in Saltaire, Bradford, UK. The exhibition showcases a series of limited edition Acrylic Panels, alongside a collection of small scale soft sculptures. The show will run for 4 weeks. Both Fabric and I see this as the beginning of something wonderful.

I excited to announce the launch of the “Woven Narratives” project website at www.wovennarratives.com, featuring the majority of the collaborative works which Fabric Lenny and myself have created together over recent months. The website is a living document and is growing through an organic process of collaboration, in much the same way as our image rich compositions have developed.

Opening: Live+Birds Launch Show

What do 18 artists from around the globe have in common with 10 orphans from Zimbabwe Africa – Chickens if course!

A little over six months ago I sat in my living room with Stevan Talevski. He shared about the progress of Warehouse242′s efforts in Zimbabwe with funding an Income Generating Activity(IGA) through a partnership with Hope For Aids. I had recently returned from 2010 Mobile Art Con sponsored by iamda and the idea to highlight the launch of the new business with an art show hatched. The next thing I know, I was contacting friends from iamda and twitter to ask if they would be willing to make some art. The background story of the Live+Birds project was emailed. The artist were asked to create art in response to the lives of orphans suffering from HIV in Zimbabwe.

On June 17, 2011 the exhibition opened comprised of a wonderful selection of original art from 18 artist around the globe. The gallery was packed, music played, and an enormous nest of egg shaped cup cakes and peeps greeted guests as they entered. People responded so positively to the wide variety of artistic styles, the high quality of the work, and the passion in the narratives. We were honored to have the representative from the Africa Hope for aids present. Mish shared briefly how the project began and how it continues to progress. He spoke of the hope it offers to turn around the lives of the orphans who are employed now by the company. He shared some the stories about the steps leading to some of the first chickens being sold, you can read more on the Live+Birds blog and keep up with the partnership through the Facebook page.

The work shown was a combination of traditional media and digital media. The digital art were output to 13 x 19 sheets and mounted on wooden stretcher bars. The show’s curator Steve Whitby created unity amidst the diverse styles with the presentation and thoughtful organization. Much of the work sold at the opening. More continued to receive little red tags in the days following. The exhibit will be open to the public through the summer. All the art hanging, and prints of the digital creations will be available for purchase through the run of the show. Proceeds from sales further support efforts in Zimbabwe.

The exhibit also was the very first public appearance of collaboration art between Fabric Lenny and myself. I was excited to that the piece was very well received.

Doggie Dialog

Thanks to my friend Fabric Lenny, I had the wonderful opportunity to join in a artist-student collaboration. I was pleased to mash up with young artist Connel Linley. Be sure to visit Fabric’s blog to see the many other great collaborations resulting from this project. I have a feeling the dogs may make another appearance soon.

After seeing me work with another student, my son decided we should do a mash-up as well…be looking for that in a future post.

‘Art from the iPad’ – Austin Texas Showing

I joining many of my favorite digital “finger painters” at Austin Details Art+Photo for an exhibit opening (today) thursday March 10.

Three of my digital paintings were selected for this show. The exhibition will display the work on iPads, on iMacs, on a 58″ HDTV as well as fine art prints. The opening reception is March 10, from 6-9pm. The exhibit will remain through the end of March. This piece continues the “sermons notes” series, art that originate from my responses to sunday worship.

The drawing is not meant as an illustration. I don’t do “word” for “word” kinda thing. Mine is more about making marks and spawning shapes from what I am hearing.

The sermon series was titled “Legitimate”. Over four weeks, the Warehouse242 talks looked at various versions of the question: what is legit? The week I began this drawing the question was, “what is legitimate desire for forward momentum?” Listen to the talk here.

As painting on the ipad and iphone are quickly becoming a portable artist tool, the McColl Center for Visual Arts is offering our first “Digit-al Finger Painting” workshop.

Join us as I demonstrates techniques, discusses creative apps available, and shares my creative process on this great new tool. Please bring your own iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Exposure: A visit to Fletcher Art Class

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with the 6th grade art class at Fletcher School. I was invied by art instructor Bess Forshaw to come and share my process of “finger painting” on the iPhone/iPad.

I brought in my iPad, hooked it up to the projector and fired up the Brushes App. It was wonderful having the ability to illustrate ideas as I spoke. One of the points I tried to leave with the kids today was the importance of the fundamentals of art. I reminded them that design principles, composition and color are key – no matter what tool is being used. I was able to leverage the stroke playback feature of Brushes to show the evolution of a drawing. I had fun pop quizzing them on color compliments and how to achieve depth in drawings. The class was active and attentive with questions: how quickly I draw, how I choose colors, and what kind of marks I like to make. Interestingly, they found my “table top” still life work a bit more accessible than the abstract villages.

I rounded out the class period by giving everyone a chance to take the iPad for a test drive in a group drawing. Each student was given a minute to offer their contribution to the piece. I am now in the process of using their marks as the foundation for a new “village” drawing. I will post it here when it is complete. I had a great time sharing my work created on the devices and encouraging creativity in the kids.

Festival of Pocket Art

I am excited to announce my participation in this year’s Festival of Pocket Art. [update]

I have posted some snap shots from the video chat to my Facebook page. I am honored to be awarded second place in the finger painting category. Roberta provided a synopsis of the event.

The festival opens August 12th in Mostar Croatia. I have the unique opportunity to join, via video chat, the keynote address. Roberta Barbarić will be presenting and has graciously invited me to share. It has been so amazing making contact with artists in lands far away from my own.
